چکیده

The EPIC pn CCD camera on board of XMM-Newton is designed to perform high throughput imaging and spectroscopy as well as high resolution timing observations in the energy range of 0.1–15keV. A temporal resolution of milliseconds or μ-seconds, depending on the instrument mode and detector, is outstanding for CCD based X-ray cameras. In order to calibrate the different observing modes of the EPIC pn CCD, XMM-Newton observations of the pulsars PSR B1509-58, PSR B0540-69 and the Crab were performed during the calibration and performance verification phase. To determine the accuracy of the on board clock against Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), PSR B1509-58 was observed simultaneously with XMM-Newton and RXTE in addition. The paper summarizes the current status of the clock calibration.

Two XMM-Newton observations of the black-hole binary GRS1915+105 were triggered in 2004 (April 17 and 21), during a long "plateau" state of the source. We analyzed the data collected with EPIC-pn in Timing and Burst modes, respectively. No thermal disc emission is required by the data; the spectrum is well fitted by four components: a primary component (either a simple power law or thermal Comp...

We present preliminary results from our ongoing study: Comparing and optimizing source detection procedures for XMM images. By constructing realistic spatial and spectral source distributions and " observing " these through the XMM Science Simulator we study how source characteristics and instrumental effects influence detection. We are currently undertaking a statistical analysis on the outcom...

The observations and interpretation of broad iron lines in the X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies are reviewed. The line profiles observed from MCG–6-30-15 and NGC 3516 show extended red wings to the line explained by large gravitational red-shifts. The results are consistent with the emission expected from an X-ray irradiated flat accretion disc orbiting very close to a black hole. Results fr...

We report on the XMM-Newton observations of the young, 102 ms pulsar PSR B1706-44. We have found that both a blackbody plus power-law and a magnetized atmospheric model plus power-law provide an excellent fit to the EPIC spectra. The two scenarios are therefore indistinguishable on a statistical basis, although we are inclined to prefer the latter on physical grounds. In this case, assuming a s...

Over the last few years, high-quality X-ray imaging and spectroscopic data from Chandra and XMM-Newton have added greatly to the understanding of the physics of radio jets. Here we describe the current state of knowledge with an emphasis on the underlying physics used to interpret multiwavelength data in terms of physical parameters.
